NAMI Walk - The Video!

The 2012 NAMI Walk is coming up in a few weeks and we hope Windham County will be well represented at Bushnell Park in Hartford on May 19. NAMI of Windham County Offers Two Family-to-Family Courses

In January, NAMI of Windham County started two Family-to-Family education programs. Family-to-family is a free 12-week program for family members or friends of individuals suffering from a serious mental illness. Participants will learn about mental illness, brain research, pharmaceuticals and treatment methods, how to help their loved one - and themselves - over the course of an illness, and more. The evening sessions are being held in Danielson and Storrs.

Although enrollment is now closed for the current classes, future classes will be scheduled for those who are interested. Classes are also available through other affiliates throughout the state. Check the NAMI Connecticut web site for more information.

Public Interest and Public Obligation

What is the public obligation to our fellow citizens who suffer from mental illnesses? NAMI Connecticut President Bob Davidson makes it clear in a brief article that everyone - and not just NAMI members - should take some time to read. Click on the link at the bottom of this page to find the full article. Share it with others you know!

Welcome to NAMI Windham County

NAMI - the National Alliance on Mental Illness - is the nation's grassroots voice on mental illness and its mission is to eliminate the scourge of mental illness and the stigma attached to it. Through support, education and advocacy, NAMI brings hope to individuals and their families and friends who are affected by these serious brain disorders.

NAMI was founded in 1979 by two mothers in Wisconsin. They discovered after a tennis game that they each had a child with severe schizophrenia. They shared the agony of the failure of the mental health system and the anguish of the society that shunned them. The initial national group started with 254 people and now in 2010 has a membership of over a quarter of a million and is involved in every state, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, American Samoa and Guam, and has counterparts in several foreign countries, including Canada.

NAMI is gaining strength and recognition every day because we are dedicated to the improvement of life for every person affected  by a severe biological brain disease. Your membership will help advance the cause. NAMI has been ranked among the top 10 organizations having excellent fiscal responsibility and was recently listed as one of the top 100 charities likely to change the world.

Enjoy your visit.
