POST NAMIWALKS 2009
We made about $80,000 at this year's Walk and money is STILL coming in! What a wonderful day!! Thank you to all our Walkers, Volunteers and Sponsors. You are the heart of NAMI!
NAMIWALKS 2009!
Come join us at the Beautiful Kentucky Horse Park on Saturday, October 10th at Noon for our 5th Annual Statwide Invitational Walk! We will have free food provided by the Saute' Cafe, face painting, a watering station for your "walking" dogs and of course a 5K fun Walk! So come out and do some "fun"raising, form a team, join a team or just walk as a individual. You can do all this ONLINE at NAMIWALKS
It's going to be loads of fun!! Rain, rain, stay away!!
Heroes in the Fight
On Thursday, September 17, 2009, NAMI Lexington will be hosting the Heroes in the Fight Awards Ceremony. This is a semi-formal event that honors providers and community supporters who are truly heroes in the fight against mental illness and stigma. New Employee and Volunteer!!
We have a new Office and Programs Coordinator!! Her name is Martice Thomas. She comes to us with lots of experience working in mental health and we are so pleased she will be a part of our team! Also, Bob Green will be volunteering with us as an intern. He is a consumer and is studying to get his Master's of Divinity from Lexington Theological Seminary. He brings lots of experience that will be helpful to advance our mission of hope and recovery from mental illnesses. Welcome them when you get a chance!
The Participation Station
The Participation Station is a new peer run center that will be similar to a drop-in center but unique to the Bluegrass area. We hope to open on November 1st. There is lots of planning going on to make this project a success. Thanks go out to Bluegrass MH-MR for donating the space at the old Comprehensive Care building at 201 Mechanic Street in Lexington, KY to use for our new Center! NAMI Lexington and consumers are very excited about having a Center to hang out in and to learn about different aspects of their mental illnesses when alot of programming is not available. This is a place for consumers, by consumers. We will have lots of activities to participate in to help consumers achieve wellness and recovery. NEW Partnering Organization to Help Us GO GREEN!
Bluegrass Pride is a organization that is going to help promote recycling. They will have volunteers to help cleanup litter at the NAMIWALK on October 10, 2009. They will also help with media promotion of the Walk and will place our Walk info on their website. They will bring items to the Walk such as pocket ashtrays, car ashtrays and litter reporting cards. NAMIWALKS Kick-Off Event
On Friday, August 14, 2009 from 11:30am-1:00pm at the Fayette County Extension Service on Red Mile Road in Lexington, NAMI Lexington will be hosting the 5th Annual NAMIWALKS Kick-off Event! Themed "Lunch, Learn, and Launch," this luncheon will focus on information, resources and technical how to's about all things NAMI WALKS. Anyone wanting to organize a team, get involved or recruit someone you know to join the WALK are invited to attend! Please RSVP to our office at (859) 272-7891 by August 7, 2009 or email namiwalks@namilex.org. Seating is limited and cannot be guaranteed without a reservation.
Consumer/Family 4th of July Party!
It's that time of year again! We will be hosting our 4th of July party on Sunday, July 5, 2009 from 2:30pm-4:00pm at the Faye Morton Consumer & Family Center on the grounds of Eastern State Hospital in the basement of the Wendell Building. We will have lots of fun and have great food catered by The Saute' Cafe'. So come out and join us! Ella & Kathy will be on hand to provide our entertainment!
The Soloist
A new movie is coming out the weekend of April 24th. This movie is about a homeless man with schizophrenia and his relationship that builds with a reporter who finds out that this man is a gifted musician. This movie received a 5 star in the Lexington Herald Leader. We will have a booth at the Kentucky Theatre for the first week that the movie premieres. This is truly an excellent depiction of someone who is living with a severe mental illness. So check it out!
Derby Party
NAMI Lexington will be hosting our 6th Annual Kentucky Derby Party on Saturday, May 2nd at 5:00pm. We will have lots of good food. We will "place our bets" for prizes and spend time with good friends. Ella Hunter and Kathy Schneider will be on hand to host the games. Ladies, don't forget your derby hat! Come on out to the Faye Morton Consumer and Family Center at Eastern State Hospital and join us for all the fun!!

Kelly Gunning, our Executive Director, has been granted a three month sabbatical. This is NAMI Lexington's way in supporting Kelly as she has supported so many others.

Achieving Wellness and Recovery in Schizophrenia. Join us for an informative and interactive discussion on schizophrenia. It will be held Tuesday, March 24, 2009 from 7:00pm-8:30pm at the Eastern State Hospital Cafeteria. A light dinner will be served. NEW Family-to-Family Class

Calling ALL Artists
NAMI member and artist, Gina Burns, is looking for any kind of art by consumers for an art show that will be held later this year. Any kind of artistic work will be accepted. Crisis Stabilization Unit
There is a new and beautiful Crisis Stabilization Unit that has opened on the grounds of Eastern State Hospital. It is run by the Bluegrass Outpatient Department and has some staff from the former Crisis Stabilization Unit in Harrodsburg. We are very excited about this new Unit. It even has plasma TVs!!
