NEWS

AFFILIATE  NEWS

We meet every other Thursday night in the Lower Lounge at St. Augustine's University Parish on Hickory and Pine Streets in Platteville.  Meetings start at 7 pm.  Call (608) 348-6136 to confirm meeting dates.

MENTAL HEALTH IN THE NEWS

The stories in our semimonthly newsletter are drawn from three major sources.  We summarize information from them.  Contact Us if you would prefer to receive the printed version instead of, or in addition to, following these links.

The National Library of Medicine, the medical library at the National Institutes of Health, is the nation's premiere source for medical information.  Their databases are designed for different groups, including patients and doctors.  NLM provides news stories for the past 30 days.  These stories are organized by illness.

Yahoo also provides major news stories for the past 30 days for mental illness, which is not sorted into more detailed conditions.  I cannot make the link go to the correct section automatically, so when you reach Yahoo, you must select News, then Health, then Diseases/Conditions, then Mental Health down on the right side.

For further medical information, see our Medical Information Sources page.

LEGAL ISSUES CORNER

NAMI has a federal legislation page that provides information on national issues and helps you write a letter to them to email or print to fax or mail.   For brief summaries of state and federal legislation affecting the mentally ill, see our Political Issues page.   Issues include:

  • Keeping Families Together Act, S380/HR 823/HR 2865 Funds state grants to provide services to prevent parents from having to relinquish custody.  Families being forced to give up custody for their children to qualify for treatment is a national scandal.
  • Dylan Lee James Act, S183, HR 1443, Allows families to purchase Medicaid coverage for disabled children.
Call Sen Herb Kohl at  (800) 247-5645  to thank him for cosponsoring this bill.
Call Rep. Ron Kind at (888) 442-8040 to thank him for cosponsoring this bill.
  • Paul Wellstone Mental Health Equitable Treatment Act of 2005, HR 1402:  Insurance parity for mental health.
Call Rep. Ron Kind at (888) 442-8040 to thank him for cosponsoring this bill.
  • Mentally Ill Offender Treatment and Crime Reduction Act, S1194/HR 2387  Supports jail diversion programs.  This was passed and is now law, but needs to be funded in budgets.
  • COLA for Increasing Mental Health required coverage to adjust for inflation since 1985.  AB 252, Senate bill 128.  This is a Wisconsin measure.
Call Assemblyman Stephen Freese at (888) 534-0051 to thank him for cosponsoring this bill.
  • TABOR (Taxpayer's Bill of Rights) is a State measure to reduce spending at the local and community level.  Federal and state cuts have made providing services difficult for localities already!

We are represented on the federal level by:

 Senator Herb Kohl    (800) 247-5645
 Senator Russell Feingold    (202) 224-5323
 Representative Ron Kind    (888) 442-8040

Further contact information and information on how to contact challengers for their opinions is on our Political Issues page.
