CO-OCCURRING DISORDERS: Addictions and Mental Health Issues

Please join NAMI for an evening of discussion, support & refreshments!

This is your opportunity to hear about topics such as:
Local treatment resources for co-occuring disorders, current information on treatments, the psychology of addictions, advances in psycho-pharmacology for addictions.

How does treatment work? What about methadone?
What are the challenges of recovery? Why are people resistant to recovery?
What are the bio-psycho-social-spiritual aspects?
How do I maintain a relationship while setting limits?
What's my role when someone doesn't want to deal with their addictions?
How do I walk that line between enabling or drawing that line that could make things worse?

Our panel includes:
Bill Manov, PhD, Chief of Santa Cruz County Alcohol and Drug Programs
for 25 years. Certified Drug Counselor, with Doctorate in clinical psychology. Past experience includes work in LA in children's day treatment mental health clinic, & residential treatment for individuals living with mental illness.

Cecilia Krebs, RN, Community Clinic Program Director of Janus of Santa Cruz
which includes Detox, Residential, Outpatient, Relapse Preventions, and Medication Assistance treatment programs. Cecilia is a Certified Addictions Registered Nurse with 20 years experience working in chemical dependency and expertise in treatment of opiate addictions. She was inspired to become a psychiatric nurse by her brother's schizophrenia.

Eli Chance MSW, Coordinator of the Avenues Program, Community Connections, Santa Cruz County Mental Health
. For over 10 years Eli has worked with youth, families and adults throughout Santa Cruz County. The last five years he has worked extensively with adults with co-occurring mental health and substance abuse disorders

Spring Classes

NAMI Peer to Peer Class
Peer to Peer is an unique, experiential learning program for people with any serious mental illness who are interested in establishing and maintaining their wellness and recovery. The course consists of 10 two-hour units and is taught by a team of two trained “Mentors” who are personally experienced at living well with mental illness.

Each Class contains a combination of lecture and interactive exercise material and closes with Mindfulness Practice. Classes build on
each other, therefore attendance each week is required.

Class Starts Thursday, May 30th
from 3:30-5:30pm and continues every Thursday for 10 weeks.

Family to Family Classes
This excellent 12 week educational program helps families and friends to understand and help their loved ones.

NAMI Basics Class
NAMI BASICS is a program that is intended for parents and caregivers of children and adolescents age 17 and under with mental illness. Call 427-8020 to reserve your spot for the next class.

NAMI Provider Education Series
This important course is relevant to all professionals who serve individuals with serious mental illness and/or their families. The series will give you a working understanding of the bio-psycho-social model of collaborative treatment, insight into the lived experience of mental illness, understanding of adaptation to diagnosis, medication and treatment, and an appreciation of the positive outcomes of team collaboration where people struggling with mental illness, family members and professionals work together. The format is innovative, interactive and dynamic, presented by a team of consumers, family members and Ellen Adams, LMFT.

The course is offered at no cost and meets the requirements for 15 Continuing Education Units for LMFTs, LCSWs, as required by California Board of Behavioral Sciences, Alicia Najera, LCSW, Provider #1109
