Come Join Us For Our Upcoming Monthly Meetings

Program for NAMI Austin meeting, Sept. 28, 2009

NAMI Austin membership will sponsor a conversation with Robin Peyson, Executive Director of NAMI Texas and Debbie Webb, Exec. Dir. of PLAN of Central Texas about developing a Coalition for Responsible Care to advocate on mental health issues in Travis County and Central Texas. Advocacy and education about mental health must occur at many levels: local, state and federal, as well as personal, family and community.

Bring your experiences and opinions to join the conversation, and determine what YOU can do this year and next to change the status of mental health care in Central Texas.

2009 NAMIWALKS for the Mind of America
Saturday, October 10, 2009
Auditorium Shores on Lady Bird Lake in Downtown Austin

Various Walk committees are now forming. Our first task is recruiting sponsors for this year's Walk. If you, a family member or friend have contacts in the business community, please consider asking them to become a Walk sponsor. We would appreciate your help in making connections with key people in local and regional businesses/organizations who can support us with a philanthropic donation.

We have a wide range of sponsorships available from $250 all the way up to $10,000. Many times we just need a contact name to get "our foot in the door." One of the truisms of fundraising is that "people give to people" meaning that the ask-ers relationship with, or connection to, the ask-ee, is often times more important than the cause they are asking them to support. We will be happy to follow up on any leads you can provide.

If you are interested in helping plan this year's walk, please call Andrea Hunt at the NAMI Austin Office at 512-420-9810 or Margie Gardner at 512-925-8155 or send us an e-mail.

Borderline Personality Disorder Support Group

NAMI Austin is pleased to offer a free monthly support group for friends and family members of people with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). Participants will have an opportunity to learn more about the disorder, to identify positive coping strategies, and to develop a network of supportive peers. A licensed mental health professional will moderate all group sessions.

The group will meet on the first Monday of each month from 7:30 - 9 pm, beginning on March 3, 2008. All meetings will be held in the Canteen Meeting Room at the Austin State Hospital at 4110 Guadalupe (the same room where NAMI Austin monthly meetings are held).

If you have any questions, please e-mail familyconnections@themib.com.
