Welcome to NAMI Broward County 

At NAMI Broward County we serve all of the county including: Fort Lauderdale, Hollywood, Pompano Beach, Pembroke Pines,  Sunrise, Davie, Plantation, Weston, Margate,  Lauderdale Lakes, Lauderhill and Coral Springs. Along with serving Broward County we also reach out into Miami Dade County and Palm Beach County.

Broward County is  located in the U.S. State of Florida. As of 2010, the population was 1,748,066; making it the second most populated county in the state Its county seat is Fort Lauderdale.

It is also the eighteenth most populous county in the United States and one of three counties that comprise the South Florida metropolitan area (Wiki).

NAMI Broward is very excited to announce that we are offering Three Family to Family Classes  starting in January, 2013

TWO Family to Family Classes will be in English

1.    Sundays at 2:00 starting January 6 at Broward General Medical Center, West Wing - Fourth Floor, 1600 Andrews Ave, Fort Lauderdale 33316.

2.   Wednesdays at 6:30 starting January 16. at a Central Broward location.


We have had so many people wanting to take the class, that we added an extra class. We are glad that we can now offer two  sessions to try to meet the demand.

ONE Family to Family Class in Spanish will be starting on  January 14

This is the second time De Familia A Familia is being offered in Broward.

NAMI Broward will be holding a NAMI De Familia A Familia course starting Monday, January 14. De Familia A Familia is the Spanish version of the evidence-based NAMI Family-to-Family 12 Week Education Course. To learn more about De Familia A Familia, visit NAMI.ORG.

The class will be started on Monday, January 14 at 5:30 at Rebels Drop In Center in Memorial Hospital, 3400 N 29 Ave, Hollywood, FL 33020. This is the second time NAMI Broward has offered this couse in Spanish. Please let your Spanish speaking friends and relatives know about this class. What is NAMI’s Family-to-Family Program?

The NAMI Family-to-Family Education Program is a free, 12-week course for family caregivers of individuals with severe mental illnesses.

  • The course is taught by trained family members
  • All instruction and course materials are free to class participants 
  • Over 300,000 family members have graduated from this national program

What does the Course Include?

  • Current information about schizophrenia, major depression, bipolar disorder (manic depression), panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, borderline personality disorder, and co-occurring brain disorders and addictive disorders
  • Up-to-date information about medications, side effects, and strategies for medication adherence
  • Current research related to the biology of brain disorders and the evidence-based, most effective treatments to promote recovery
  • Gaining empathy by understanding the subjective, lived experience of a person with mental illness
  • Learning in special workshops for problem solving, listening, and communication techniques
  • Acquiring strategies for handling crises and relapse
  • Focusing on care for the caregiver: coping with worry, stress, and emotional overload
  • Guidance on locating appropriate supports and services within the community
  • Information on advocacy initiatives designed to improve and expand services

Peer to Peer Class is now forming and will start Wednesday, March 6  at 4:00  (New Date)

What is Peer to Peer?

Peer-to-Peer is a unique, experiential learning program for people with any serious mental illness who are interested in establishing and maintaining their wellness and recovery.

  • Peer-to-Peer consists of ten two-hour units and is taught by a team of two trained “Mentors” and a volunteer support person who are personally experienced at living well with mental illness.
  • Mentors are trained in an intensive three day training session and are supplied with teaching manuals.
  • Participants come away from the course with a binder of hand-out materials, as well as many other tangible resources: an advance directive; a “relapse prevention plan” to help identify tell-tale feelings, thoughts, behavior, or events that may warn of impending relapse and to organize for intervention; mindfulness exercises to help focus and calm thinking; and survival skills for working with providers and the general public.

 Basics Class is now forming and will start Thursday, February 21, 2013 

What is Basics?

NAMI Basics is the new signature education program for parents and other caregivers of children and adolescents living with mental illnesses. The NAMI Basics course is taught by trained teachers who are the parent or other caregivers of individuals who developed the symptoms of mental illness prior to the age of 13 years.

The course consists of six classes, each lasting for 2 ½ hours. Classes may be offered weekly for six consecutive weeks, or may be offered twice

per week for three weeks to accommodate the hectic schedules of parents.

  Family Support Groups

NAMI Broward County offers support groups for families of those with a serious mental illness. They are held at the following locations and times.  No registration required and no cost to attend: 

 ****   First & Third Wednesday of each Month at  Silver Impact 7155 West Oakland Park Blvd, Lauderhill  7:00 PM

 ****   Third Saturday of each Month at  Geo Care/ South Florida State Hospital 800 East Cypress Drive, Pembroke Pines, FL at 10:00AM

****    Second and Fourth Tuesday, 7:30pm at Broward Health Imperial Point Medical Center in the Medical Staff Library, Main Entrance, 6401 N. Federal Highway, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33308

****    Second  Tuesday, 6:00 pm in Spanish, at Rebel's Drop In Center at Memorial Hospital, 3400 North 29 Avenue, Hollywood, FL 33020. This Support Group will be started on January 15, 2013.  Call Camilo at 305-721-9698 e-mail:

NAMI Connection Recovery Support Groups

Connection is a weekly recovery support group for people living with mental illness in which people learn from each others’ experiences, share coping strategies, and offer each other encouragement and understanding.

We are now sponsoring two weekly Connection groups:

 Every Monday 4:00-5:30pm at Rebels Drop In Center, 3400 North 29th Ave., Hollywood, FL 33020  

Every Tuesday 3:00 - 4:30 pm at  the Mental Health Association, 7145 West Oakland Park Blvd., Lauderhill, FL 33313  


Support groups can be very helpful, especially for those going through a crisis. There is no charge and you do not need a reservation to attend.

VOLUNTEERS:   NAMI Broward depends upon volunteers to keep our organizzation going strong.  There are so many ways you can help with advocacy, fundraising, training, education, community outreach, or administrative assistance in our office.
