Raising Awareness
NAMI leaders can raise awareness of mental illness, treatment, and research in diverse communities during this month by hosting special events and partnering with local businesses and organizations. Your experience with Mental Illness Awareness Week (MIAW) could give you a good idea of the types of activities and events to host to raise mental health awareness.

Mental Illness Awareness Week 2010: October 3 - 9, 2010
In 1990, the U.S. Congress established the first week of October as Mental Illness Awareness Week (MIAW) in recognition of NAMI's efforts to raise mental illness awareness. Since 1990, mental health advocates across the country have joined together during the first week of October to celebrate.
MIAW has become a NAMI tradition. It presents an opportunity to all NAMI Affiliates and State Organizations across the country to work together in communities to achieve the NAMI mission through outreach, education and advocacy.
This year’s MIAW coincides with election season, so be sure to check back here in August when sample press releases, letters to the editor and “op-eds” will be available for important press outreach efforts.
Use the idea book below to start your MIAW planning. A web banner is available for you to use on your site or in documents, and tickers and posters are available to download in English and Spanish. Printed versions of the English poster and stickers will be available in the NAMI bookstore by the end of June.
Start your MIAW preparation now and begin changing attitudes, changing lives!
