NAMI Johnson County
NAMI Johnson County
is the local affiliate of NAMI Iowa and NAMI National. NAMI, the acronym for the National Alliance on Mental Illness, is the nation’s leading grassroots, self help, education, support and advocacy organization dedicated to improving the lives of individuals and families affected by mental illness. NAMI Johnson County serves the communities of Iowa City, Coralville, North Liberty and all of Johnson County, although anyone is welcome to participate in our organization and activities.
NAMI Johnson County (NAMIJC) is an organization where people can meet and learn from each other. Educational programs and classes provide information about illnesses, symptoms, treatment options, and available services for those living with a mental illness, as well as for those with whom they live and work. NAMI advocates for access to services, treatment, support and research and is steadfast in its commitment to raising awareness and building a community of hope for all those in need.
Current NAMIJC Educational Classes, Programs and Special Projects:
Hospital Discharge Program Packets. Provide packets of information to be given out to psychiatric patients, their families, and caregivers at UI Hospitals and Clinics, VA Medical Center, and Mercy Iowa City providing educational materials on mental illness, support services in the community, and recovery.
Tell Me Where To Turn booklet.
NAMIJC is overseeing the revision and publication of the 9th
edition of this manual used by numerous organizations and agencies in Johnson County to provide information about resources for mental health issues in Johnson County.
School Project. A partnership with the Iowa City Community School District to educate staff, parents, and students about mental illness.
Crisis Cards. Billfold-sized cards with information on how to deal with a mental health emergency.
A detailed guide book that provides information on the services and problems addressed by mental health organizations/agencies to assist families in navigating the complex and often confusing mental health system in Johnson County.
Monthly and weekly support group sessions for people with mental illness and their families.
* In the event of severe weather the support group will be canceled. We will follow the Iowa City School District cancellations. If schools are closed the support group will be canceled.
A free 12-week class for family members of loved ones with mental illnesses that provides education/skill training to better care for themselves and their loved ones.
A free 10-week class taught by people living with mental illness for others with mental illness that provides knowledge of the recovery process and wellness maintenance.
Written weekly and distributed via email.
A telephone support and referral system for mental health problems.
Printed Brochures. Information placed in community agencies, libraries, counseling offices, and businesses to inform people in our community about our services.
