It is important to stay up to date on research advances so you can make the best-informed decisions about the most effective treatment for ADHD. Much research has been done to understand ADHD in children and youth. ADHD is one of the best-studied and understood of all of the mental health conditions. The National Institute on Mental sHealth (NIMH) funded a Multimodal Treatment of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (MTA) multisite and multi-year study designed to evaluate the leading treatments for ADHD, including behavior therapy, medications and the combination of the two. The study's primary results were first published in December 1999 in the Archives of General Psychiatry. However, follow-up data continues to be released and published. The study found that combination treatment of medication and behavior therapy showed the most improved symptoms in children and adolescents. It also revealed that it is challenging and complex to follow the long-term outcomes of children and adolescents involved in these studies. There are more data and outcomes being examined from the MTA study. The results will likely be posted on the NIMH website in the near future. NIMH regularly posts additional research news about ADHD in children, adolescents and adults on its website. You may wish to regularly visit the NIMH site to receive valuable and up-to-date information on treatment options, research advances and related issues on ADHD. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) also provides family-friendly information on research on ADHD. The CDC website also includes detailed information on the nation's research agenda and the issues that are currently being studied. Additional Resources
