A Family Guide ~ Choosing the Right Treatment: What Families Need to Know About Evidence-Based Practices

By Dana Markey, Program Coordinator, NAMI Child and Adolescent Action Center

Due to popular demand, NAMI has reprinted A Family Guide ~ Choosing the Right Treatment: What Families Need to Know About Evidence-Based Practices. The guide, originally released in 2007, is designed to inform families about evidence-based practices in children’s mental health and to share information on an array of treatment and support options.  Educated and informed families are in the best position to advocate for the most effective treatments and supports for their child.

The guide has received overwhelmingly positive reviews from NAMI leaders, families, and mental health providers.

The guide is available on the NAMI website as a PDF document, or hard copies can be ordered by emailing Bianca Ruffin, Program Assistant.  The guide is free; however, shipping and handling costs need to be covered for bulk orders.

Additionally, the following sections of the guide are available online in Spanish:

  • What are Evidence-Based Practices?
  • Cautions about Evidence-Based Practices
  • How to Talk with Providers about Treatment Choices and Evidence-Based Practices
  • What are Current Evidence-Based Practices in Children’s Mental Health?
  • How Can Families Help Drive and Become More Involved in the Broader Dissemination of Evidence-Based Practices?

The fact sheets can be accessed online. If you have any questions or would like additional resources please email Dana Markey, Program Coordinator.
