The 2009 NAMI National Convention Is Almost Here!
On July 6-9, thousands of NAMI members and leaders will descend upon San Francisco for the 2009 NAMI National Convention, themed "Creating a Healthy Future for Us All."
The convention will cover a variety of issues critical to improving the lives of people affected by mental illness, including: criminalization, employment, housing, education, multiculturalism and cultural competence, parity and health care reform.
In addition, several of the nation's top researchers and clinicians will share the latest developments in diagnosis and treatment for serious mental illness.
NAMI is pleased to announce that Marsha Linehan, Ph.D., creator of dialectical behavioral therapy, a revolutionary treatment for people with borderline personality disorder, will present at the Research Plenary during the convention.
A partial list of scheduled presenters at the convention include: John Newcomer, M.D., on metabolic syndrome; Kenneth Minkoff, M.D., on co-occurring disorders; NAMI Medical Director Ken Duckworth, M.D., on health and wellness; Jill Bolte Taylor, Ph.D., on the brain; as well as many others.
Plus, for the first time, NAMI will host a wellness center at the national convention. The wellness center will offer information and tips in a health fair-like setting, including smoking cessation, nutrition, dental hygiene and medications.
In addition, members of the NAMIWalks team will lead walks around San Francisco each morning to get the day started on a healthy note.
For fans of television and cinema, there will be plenty to do as well.
NAMI will hold a screening of the recent blockbuster motion picture The Soloist starring Jamie Fox and Robert Downey, Jr.
Following the movie, author and Los Angeles Times reporter Steve Lopez and Jennifer Ayers Moore, sister of Nathaniel Ayers, will facilitate a discussion with the audience and share their personal journey to find peace and understanding in the absence of a simple solution.
During the closing banquet at the convention, NAMI will pay homage to the cast and crew of the hit FOX-TV television series, House, who have become loyal and generous supporters of the NAMI movement.
This is just a partial list of convention events. For a complete listing of convention schedules and registration information, visit NAMI's Convention Web site.
