State Advocacy Manager - Arlington VA

Job Description
We currently have an opening for a State Advocacy Manager. The State Advocacy Manager assists with coordination and implementation of NAMI’s state mental health policy, technical assistance and advocacy efforts.

Essential Functions:

•Work with Director of State Policy and Advocacy (SA Director) to develop and implement advocacy priorities and initiatives concerning state policy and legislation.

•Provide technical assistance to NAMI grassroots advocates and key partners on relevant mental health and health policy issues.

•Work with the SA Director to develop and implement capacity building tools to enhance advocacy efforts by NAMI advocates.

•Work with SA Director to analyze state policy issues and trends. In collaboration with others on the Policy Team plan strategic initiatives to drive the state policy debate pertaining to NAMI’s priorities.

• Build relationships and networks with key stakeholders including non-profit organizations, governmental agencies and industry representatives.

Minimum Qualifications:

•At least 2-4 years of experience working with grassroots leaders and membership on advocacy initiatives and campaigns;
•Familiarity with and willingness to increase understanding of state mental health, health and disability policy;
•Familiarity with the private and public mental health sectors, including the organization and financing of mental health services;
•Excellent communication skills, written, oral and presentation. Ability to explain complex policy issues to a lay audience. Experience in writing and designing policy resources that are easily understandable and accessible. Knowledge and sensitivity regarding day to day issues experienced by children and adults with serious mental illnesses and the families of such individuals;
•Ability to build and maintain collaborative relationships with a variety of stakeholders in advancing NAMI’s advocacy priorities, including state mental health and Medicaid officials, educators, criminal justice, diverse cultural communities, and others;
•Ability to work autonomously and with others as part of a team.


•Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four year college or university required. Advanced degree preferred but not required.
