![]() National Alliance on Mental Illness page printed from NAMI Rome NAMI - National Alliance for Mental Illness is dedicated to the eradication of mental illnessesand to the improvement of the quality of life for all whose lives are affected by these diseases.NAMI-Rome established in the 1980's by a tireless and very small group who sought to improve the lives of their loved ones. They would meet and comfort each other. Many times only three attended the meetings. Never giving up on their loved ones, this small group became advocates and expressed their concern when situations arose. Others heard their voices and joined the effort. In the late 1990's two became trained to facilitate the Family-To-Family education course. From this and subsequent classes came additional interested family members who wanted to join the movement. Meetings have been held in various locations, primarily churches. A gathering of NAMI Rome folks at one of our education meetings. NAMI-Rome is one of the more active NAMI affiliates in Georgia. Typically, over 30 individuals with mental illness and family members attend its monthly meetings. We have members and visitors from Bartow, Chattooga, Floyd, Gordon, Polk, and other nearby counties. NAMI-Rome has its own bylaws; however, it is considered as subsidiary of NAMI-Georgia. As such, NAMI-Rome falls under NAMI-Georgia's umbrella. NAMI-Rome strives to serve its members and the larger community by providing education and support through free courses and support groups. Additionally, members are involved in raising public awareness about mental illness.
