National Board of Directors
2009-2010

The 16 members of NAMI's National Board of Directors are elected by NAMI members to provide strategic guidance in the fulfillment of NAMI's mission to eradicate mental illnesses and improve the quality of life of all whose lives are affected by these diseases.  NAMI National Board Members have broad responsibility to govern the organization. Together and with input from all members, they make policy to govern NAMI, determine NAMI's official position on matters of public policy, set the budget and priorities of the national office, and develop strategic plans to guide organizational development.


Stephen Feinstein, Ph.D., President
Stephen H. Feinstein, PhD, came to the National board by way of NAMI Kansas, where he served five years as President. During that period he served as Chair of the NAMI State Presidents’ Council.  Steve is an Experimental Psychologist by training and has worked as a behavioral scientist, state government executive, and consultant in both the private and the public sectors.

Sheila Amdur, First Vice President
Sheila comes to the NAMI National Board from an active career both as a mental health administrator, and as a volunteer in mental health advocacy in Connecticut. She served as NAMI Connecticut's president for three years, and has directed their public policy and advocacy initiatives, which have included key participation in large mental health and health care coalitions. Sheila also served as the chair of NAMI's State Presidents' Council. Her family experiences with mental illness have forged her passion and determination to improve the understanding and treatment of mental illness in our nation.

Carol Caruso, Second Vice President
Carol comes from Pennsylvania where she is the president of the board for NAMI Pennsylvania. Carol has over thirty years experience in mental health and is very involved in NAMI within the Family to Family program and the Provider Education Course.

Guyla Daley, Treasurer
Guyla Daley is from Hilton Head Island, SC. where she owns and operates two Radio Shack dealerships. She has a degree in accounting from University of Georgia and worked actively in the field for 9 years. She is a caregiver who found NAMI in 1995. Since then she has served as affiliate President (4 years) and State President (3 years). She brings her business acumen and financial knowledge along with her grassroots experience to the NAMI Board.

Clarence Jordan
Jordan currently is manager for consumer recovery services for Magellan Health Services of Tennessee and chairs the Magellan advisory committee composed of consumers, family members and service agencies that helps guide development of behavioral health services in the state.

David J. Lushbaugh
Manager of Georgia-Pacific Corporation’s Training Support Services, Atlanta, Georgia, Dave has been active in the field of mental illness since 1995 when his son was diagnosed with schizophrenia. He has served as President of both his local NAMI affiliate and NAMI Georgia.  He was at the forefront of bringing statewide Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) to Georgia where he serves as the Chair of the Georgia CIT Advisory Board.   He is a member of the Emory University School of Medicine Psychiatry Fellowship Board of Advisors and the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, Metro Atlanta Board.

Joseph Mucenski
Mucenski is a retired New York City police detective who lost a mentally ill son to “suicide by cop.” He is also a retired instructor and department chair in Machine Tool Technology at Pima College in Tucson.

Jim Payne
Jim Payne comes from Falls Church, Va., where he has served as president of NAMI Northern Virginia. He previously served on the board of a nonprofit organization that promotes research and awareness for borderline personality disorder, where he also led family education courses.

Marty Raaymakers
Marty Raaymakers, an inspiring speaker, is a Certified Peer Specialist, currently residing in Michigan after putting 18,000 miles on her motorcycle traveling across the US during the first part of 2007.

Clarice Raichel
A native of Southwest Louisiana, Raichel has served as NAMI Southwest Louisiana’s executive director since 2003.

Kevin Sullivan
Kevin Sullivan served as Connecticut’s Lt. Governor from 2004 to 2007 and in the State Senate from 1987 to 2006, including four terms as its top leader.
