December 2010 Multicultural Action Center Highlights of 2010 For several years, NAMI has worked with leaders within Asian American and Pacific Islander (APPI) communities on pertinent mental health issues. The NAMI AAPI Leaders Group was created to guide this work to address the need to reduce stigma and increase access, quality and cultural/linguistic competence of mental health services and supports for AAPI communities across the country. With the desire to reenergize our efforts, the Multicultural Action Center hosted an AAPI Mental Health Listening Session in Los Angeles in early November. The meeting brought together 20 individuals representing perspectives in research, service provision and lived experience with mental illness (personal or family member) and other leaders in the AAPI mental health arena. In gathering the variety of perspectives and expertise, the primary objectives were to elicit the expert advice in the following areas in regard to AAPI communities:
In January 2011, the Multicultural Action Center will release the proceedings report of this meeting which will provide opportunities for continued collaboration and direct NAMI’s next steps for resource development, support and engagement. One of the ways participants of the listening session will continue to advise NAMI is through the AAPI Leaders Group. |
