Congress Increases Mental Health Funding in Some Areas

The passage of the 2014 omnibus budget bill represents the first time since 2012 that Congress has been able to reach agreement on the annual budget. The 2014 budget agreement (HR 3547), passed last month, was supported in the House and Senate by both Democrats and Republicans. After several years of budget cuts, the budget bill restored funding in some areas and prevented major cuts in others. Below are some highlights from the budget bill related to mental health.

Mental health parity is the recognition of mental health conditions as equivalent to physical illnesses. Historically, many health insurance companies limited benefits for mental health to a much lower level than those available for physical conditions. With the passage of the Paul Wellstone and Pete Domenici Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act (MHPAEA) mental health parity is the law of the land. NAMI is asking for your help to make compliance with the federal parity law a reality.

HUD Announces Awards for 3,530 Units of New Supportive Housing in 13 States

On February 13, 2013, the US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) announced grants totaling $98 million for 3,530 units of supportive housing for people living with serious mental illness and other disabilities – including people living in institutions and people experiencing chronic homelessness.
