Community Support Services for adults with mental health needs and their families. All services are free and include: Information and referral “warmline”, Peer Bridging Program, Drop-In Center, Self-Help Groups. Support Groups for adults and children who have someone with mental illness in the family are also available. Community outreach and education are also components of the Putnam MHA program.

4. Peer Specialist Program
Recipient-staffed information and referral phone line to assist callers in locating mental health services in Putnam County and neighboring communities. Also provides peer support.

5. Family Support Group Held at Putnam Hospital Center
Sponsored by The Mental Health Association in Putnam County.
This is a group for family members and friends of people who are mentally ill where they can find ongoing support and assistance with other matters, including:
- Emotional help
- How to help the family member or friend
- Where to take grievances
- Help from the experience of others

Provides Family Assistance to children of families without sufficient means of support due to absence of a parent, unemployment of principal wage earner or parent’s incapacity.
Provides information and assistance on the Home Energy Assistance Program, Food Stamps, Medicaid, and Housing to eligible residents.
Receives reports of child abuse, investigates and protects children from abuse, and protects adults 18 years and older from abuse and neglect.
Provides a range of children’s services, including preventive services, foster care, adoptive services, and day care referrals.
Establishes child support, provides legal representation and related enforcement and collection services.

For workers who have worked a sufficient period of time for retirement and disability benefits may be paid and to certain members of their families. Survivor benefits may be paid to the widow(er) and children
Supplemental Security Income payments are made to aged, blind or disabled individuals who have limited income and resources.

CAREERS helps people with disabilities find productive, sustained employment in their communities by providing individualized job placement, extensive one-on-one job training and long-term follow-along and support services.
Payment Terms: All services are free of charge to clients and employers
Eligibility: Must be Putnam or Westchester County resident, at least 16 years old, and diagnosed with learning, developmental, psychiatric and/or physical disability
Special Programs:
High School Transition Program: helps students with disabilities make the transition from high school to successful employment.
Work directly with students, school staff, and families. Provide pre-employment training and assistance, job placement, on-the-job training and follow-along services to insure long-term success
Community Transition Program: same services as High School Transition Program, provided to clients at community mental health programs to enable them to make the transition to independent living and successful employment.
Corporate Outreach Program: established to open the door to new jobs in the area’s larger businesses and corporations.
Recovery International Putnam Chapter
Recovery International is often called the best secret in mental health. Founded by Dr. Abraham Low a Neuropsychiatrist at the University of Illinois at Chicago, this peer run cognitive behavioral self help group helps people manage feelings, impulses, fears and anger that impair the ability to lead a normal life.
The Putnam Chapter meeting takes place every Monday morning from 10 AM till 12 PMRecovery International does not charge a fee however a voluntary free will offering is taken up at each meeting with a suggested donation of $5. No one is turned away for inability to donate.

Visiting Nurse Services in Putnam employs registered nurses with advanced psychiatric training. The nurses conduct home visits for assessment, evaluation and the development of a treatment plan with interventions related to mental health issues in conjunction with medical/surgical needs. The program meets the total health care requirements of individuals utilizing a case management approach led by a psychiatric nurse specialist. Adjunct services complementing the mental health component include home health aides, medical/surgical nurses and relevant rehabilitation therapies. The Mental Health Home Caste Program serves children, adolescents adults, and the elderly.
