OCTOBER Halloween Stigma In a front-page story, The Chicago Tribune has focused national attention to NAMI's grassroots protests of haunted "insane asylums." StigmaBuster Alert: October 12, 2006 It’s the season for ghosts and goblins, but also stigma. In some communities, “haunted house” attractions take the form of “insane asylums,” featuring “mental patients” as murderers or ghouls. Even though intended as “fun,” the violent stereotypes serve to perpetuate stigma -- which as reported by the U.S. Surgeon General is one of the greatest barriers to people getting help when they need it. SEPTEMBER NAMI StigmaBuster Alert: September 8, 2006 We look at a new show entitled "Help Me Help You" and some informal statistics about our survey last month on whether mental illness could ever be funny. AUGUST NAMI StigmaBuster Alert: August 4, 2006 We take a look at what's new on the fall TV line-up and the National Anti-Stigma Campaign. APRIL NAMI StigmaBuster Alert: April 10, 2006 This alert centers on issues of stigma in the FOX-TV reality show, Unaminmous. MARCH NAMI StigmaBuster Alert: March 15, 2006 Archie McPhee & Co. in Seattle is the online retailer of an offensive action figure produced by Accoutrements, also in Seattle. One of the company's latest products is an "Obsessive Compulsive Action Figure" that includes a surgical mask and sanitary towelette. JANUARY NAMI StigmaBuster Alert: January 28, 2006 More news on the ABC-TV show Crumbs NAMI StigmaBuster Alert: January 20, 2006 Continued monitoring of the ABC-TV show Crumbs NAMI StigmaBuster Alert: January 13,2006 ABC-TV's new comedy show, Crumbs premiered Thursday, January 12, 2006. Urgent action is needed before the next episode on January 19. The first part of this alert describes the stigmatizing aspects of the show. The second part lists the names of companies that had commercial advertisements run during the show's time slot. Please send them messages before January 19 to protest their support of stigma. 2005DECEMBERStigmaBuster Alert: December 15, 2005 Last week's death of Rigoberto Alipzar, the man with bipolar disorder shot by air marshals during a medical crisis aboard an American Airlines flight in Miami, deeply affected consumers and their families. NOVEMBER StigmaBuster Alert: November 18, 2005 A new documentary about stigma, spirituality, and recovery; a call for stories on effectiveness of medications; and updates on past issues. OCTOBER NAMI StigmaBuster Alert - October 6, 2005 Unfortunately, it's the time of year when some Halloween "haunted house" attractions are cast as insane asylums. SEPTEMBER NAMI StigmaBuster Alert - September 9, 2005 NAMI is responding to the tragedy of Hurricane Katrina to try to make sure that that does not happen to the estimated 500,000 people in Alabama, Louisiana, and Mississippi who live with serious mental illnesses. AUGUST NAMI StigmaBuster Alert: August 27, 2005 StigmaBusters take action against a stigmatizing article in Reader's Digest and new television shows premiering in September. JULY NAMI StigmaBuster Alert: July 15, 2005 While fighting Tom Cruise with one hand, many Stigmabusters have also protested with the other a recent television commercial for Wendy's fast food chain -- in which a customer can't decide what to order, because he suffers from "multiple personality eating disorder." JUNE NAMI StigmaBusters Alert: July 1, 2005 Protests have grown steadily since actor Tom Cruise, while promoting the movie, “The War of the Worlds,” first criticized actress Brooke Shields for taking antidepressants for postpartum depression. NAMI StigmaBuster Alert: June 1, 2005 On June 2, CBS-TV repeats an April 28 episode of the top-rated television show "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" featuring an investigation in a state mental hospital filled with violent patients and sex offenders. Many StigmaBusters found it extremely offensive the first time around. APRIL NAMI StigmaBusters Alert: April 14, 2005 Opportunities to raise awareness, stop stigma and participate in events dealing with mental illness awareness around the country. MARCH NAMI Stigma Busters Alert: March 15, 2005 If Warner Brothers (WB) Entertainment has its way, new, slightly menacing-looking versions of Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck and other classic cartoon characters will appear in Fall 2005 as part of a brand new Saturday morning television series named "Loonatics," although WB recently told NAMI that the name is being changed to "Loonatics Unleashed," subject to review by WB's Legal Department. FEBRUARY NAMI StigmaBusters Alert: February 17, 2005 NAMI is proud of Stella March who coordinates our StigmaBusters program. JANUARY NAMI StigmaBusters Alert: January 26, 2005 The protest against the Vermont Teddy Bear (VTB) Company's bear in a straitjacket has grown, including a January 22 article in the New York Times and calls for the company's CEO to resign from the board of trustees of the largest hospital in the state. NAMI StigmaBusters Alert: January 14, 2005 Fear is No Longer My Reality, which will arrive in bookstores in February, is the story of Jamie Blyth, who gained nationwide attention when he appeared as one of the original final suitors on ABC-TV reality series " The Bachelorette" and disclosed his nine-year struggle with anxiety order. 2004DECEMBERNAMI StigmaBusters Alert: December 26, 2004 In the fight against stigma, key quotes and resources always come in handy. OCTOBER NAMI StigmaBusters Alert - October 29, 2004 General Hospital fans were dismayed with the portrayal of mental illness on the soap opera while local protests in Gainesville concerning a Halloween fundraiser were successful. NAMI StigmaBusters Alert: October 1, 2004 NAMI has charged CBS TV with gross irresponsibility for its September 22 broadcast of the "Dr. Phil Primetime Special: Family First," in which the so-called pop psychologist not only "blamed parents first," but may have endangered the lives of children with severe mental illnesses. SEPTEMBER StigmaBusters Alert: September 23, 2004 Our letter to the Universal Orlando Studios CEO/Chairman, Robert Gault concerning the stigmatizing mental illness theme for Universal Orlando Theme Parks Halloween Horrors Events during October 2004 met with a negative response. AUGUST StigmaBusters Alert: August 30, 2004 Universal Orlando Theme Park Halloween Horrors promotion materials state that they will drive "visitors insane." StigmaBusters Alert - August 18, 2004 A new documentary airing on the Hallmark Channel that deals with issues related to suicide and the clergy. JULY StigmaBusters Alert July 8, 2004 June 2004 MTV Movie Awards Show Presents Stigmatizing Images. JUNE StigmaBusters Alert June 16, 2004 Boys Life magazine runs full page ad for Nintendo that is highly stigmatizing. A positive report on Anti-stigma in the classroom. APRIL Special Alert: NAMIWALKS Deliver Message Against Stigma Tens of thousands of Americans will take to the streets beginning this weekend (May 1-2) to help eliminate stigma and raise public awareness that recovery from mental illness is possible.
