Halloween Stigma In a front-page story, The Chicago Tribune has focused national attention to NAMI's grassroots protests of haunted "insane asylums."
StigmaBuster Alert: October 12, 2006 It’s the season for ghosts and goblins, but also stigma.
In some communities, “haunted house” attractions take the form of “insane asylums,” featuring “mental patients” as murderers or ghouls. Even though intended as “fun,” the violent stereotypes serve to perpetuate stigma -- which as reported by the U.S. Surgeon General is one of the greatest barriers to people getting help when they need it.

One of the company's latest products is an "Obsessive Compulsive Action Figure" that includes a surgical mask and sanitary towelette.

NAMI StigmaBuster Alert: January 13,2006 ABC-TV's new comedy show, Crumbs premiered Thursday, January 12, 2006. Urgent action is needed before the next episode on January 19. The first part of this alert describes the stigmatizing aspects of the show. The second part lists the names of companies that had commercial advertisements run during the show's time slot. Please send them messages before January 19 to protest their support of stigma.

NAMI StigmaBusters Alert: July 1, 2005 Protests have grown steadily since actor Tom Cruise, while promoting the movie, “The War of the Worlds,” first criticized actress Brooke Shields for taking antidepressants for postpartum depression.
NAMI StigmaBuster Alert: June 1, 2005 On June 2, CBS-TV repeats an April 28 episode of the top-rated television show
"CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" featuring an investigation in a state mental hospital filled with violent patients and sex offenders. Many StigmaBusters found it extremely offensive the first time around.

NAMI Stigma Busters Alert: March 15, 2005 If Warner Brothers (WB) Entertainment has its way, new, slightly menacing-looking versions of Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck and other classic cartoon characters will appear in Fall 2005 as part of a brand new Saturday morning television series named "Loonatics," although WB recently told NAMI that the name is being changed to "Loonatics Unleashed," subject to review by WB's Legal Department.

NAMI StigmaBusters Alert: January 26, 2005 The protest against the Vermont Teddy Bear (VTB) Company's bear in a straitjacket has grown, including a January 22 article in the New York Times and calls for the company's CEO to resign from the board of trustees of the largest hospital in the state.
NAMI StigmaBusters Alert: January 14, 2005 Fear is No Longer My Reality, which will arrive in bookstores in February, is the story of Jamie Blyth, who gained nationwide attention when he appeared as one of the original final suitors on ABC-TV reality series " The Bachelorette" and disclosed his nine-year struggle with anxiety order.
