May 15, 2013 Let's Talk Mental Illness Hakeem Rahim, motivational speaker; life-coach; co-founder, Uniondale Foundation for Educational Excellence Hakeem was the first African-American Uniondale High School graduate to be accepted to Harvard. Despite a psychotic break and a diagnosis of bipolar disorder, he still managed to graduate from Harvard with honors and go on to earn an MA from Columbia University. Hear him share his inspirational story of recovery, and learn about the success he's been having speaking to students in Nassau County. The meeting starts at 7:30 PM in Sloman Auditorium at The Zucker Hillside Hospital, 266th Street & 76th Avenue, Glen Oaks, NY. The Caring & Sharing group meets at 6:00 PM.
June 19, 2013 CIT: Sensitivity Training for the Police John Shorter, coordinator, CIT (Crisis Intervention Team) Project Confrontations between the police and people with mental illness can sometimes spiral out of control with tragic consequences. Learn about the 40 hours of special crisis intervention training local police forces have received from NAMI Queens/Nassau, thanks to a grant from the Unitarian Universalist Congregation at Shelter Rock.
