No Stigma Speakers Bureau - In Partnership With TCHHSA
The No Stigma Speakers Bureau is a group of volunteers whose goal is to dispel the stigma of mental illness in our community by providing stories of mental illness and recovery from the perspective of those affected by this medical condition. In addition, the family members, supporters and professionals participate in the panel presentations to provide their perspective and informational topics such as: treatment, risk assessment, housing, family support, differentiating mental Illness from substance dependence, and the goals of recovery for consumers and families.
What is Stigma?
Stigma is a word referring to the negative 'mark' attached to people who possess any attribute, trait or disorder that marks that person as different from 'normal' people. This 'difference' is viewed as undesirable and shameful, and can result in people having negative attitudes and responses (prejudice and discrimination) toward another person.
Adapted from O'Grady, C. (2004). Stigma as experienced by family members of people with severe mental illness: The impact of participation in self-help/mutual aid support groups. Unpublished doctoral dissertation, University of Toronto.
