Challenge the President’s Veto of Children’s Health Insurance

October 12, 2007

On October 18, the House of Representatives is scheduled to vote on a motion to override President Bush’s veto of legislation renewing and improving the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP).  The vote is expected to be very close.  There is already sufficient support for the SCHIP in the Senate to override the veto, so the House vote is critical. The SCHIP bill includes several important provisions:

  • A requirement for private-sector SCHIP plans to cover mental illness at parity with all other medical-surgical benefits.
  • Funding to cover an additional 4 million eligible, but as yet unenrolled, children,
  • A 6-month moratorium on regulations curbing rehabilitation services funded under Medicaid.

ACT NOW!

Click here to write your House member today and tell him or her to support overriding the veto on the SCHIP bill (HR 976). You can also call 800-828-0498, the special toll-free number that has been set up to reach all House offices in advance of the vote on October 18.    Tell Congress that supporting SCHIP would provide needed care to eligible children, especially those with mental illness!
