Tell Your Representative to Vote in Favor of the Medicaid Moratoria!

Efforts in Congress to halt regulations that would undermine Medicaid financing of critical mental health services are moving forward.   On April 16, the House Energy and Commerce Committee, by a vote of 45-0, endorsed legislation (HR 5613) to impose moratoria on 7 separate Medicaid regulations.  The bill would prevent these regulations from going into effect through April 1, 2009, when a new Administration will be in office.

The full House is expected to take up HR 5613 later this week.  Please continue to contact your representative in the House! Tell them to support this legislation to stop regulations that would devastate funding for critical services for Medicaid beneficiaries with serious mental illness.

HR 5613 Has Bipartisan Support

Despite threats of a Presidential veto, efforts to stop these regulations have broad support from both Democrats and Republicans in Congress, as well as both Democratic and Republican Governors.  It is important to note that last week HR 5613 received unanimous support from all members of the Energy and Commerce Committee.  NAMI is especially grateful to the Republican members of this Committee that voted to protect Medicaid funding for mental health services.  Advocates in the districts of these members are urged to contact them and encourage them to vote in favor of HR 5613 again this week.
