NAMI is pleased to announce the winner of the 2013 NAMI Scientific Research Award to Patrick D. McGorry, A.O., M.D., Ph.D., F.R.C.P., FRANZCP. Dr. McGorry is a Professor of Youth Mental Health at the University of Melbourne and Executive Director of Orygen Youth Health Research Centre and Director of Clinical Services of Orygen Youth Health in Victoria, Australia.
A world-leading clinician and researcher in the areas of early psychosis, early intervention and youth mental health, Professor McGorry’s work has played an integral role in the development of safe, effective treatments and innovative research involving the needs of young people with emerging mental disorders, notably psychotic and severe mood disorders. The results of his work has led to the creation and evaluation of holistic and recovery-oriented models of care for young people and their families. Professor McGorry and his key research colleagues have influenced health policy in Australia and other countries, advising governments and health systems.
The event, sponsored by the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), is an invitation only evening with networking opportunities with an audience of leading members of the scientific and research communities, the media, members of Congress, political leaders, academia, community leaders and the corporate sector.
During the evening, NAMI will also present awards to several members of Congress whose advocacy and leadership have made a major impact on the lives of people with mental illness.
Called the Swedish gem on the Potomac River, the House of Sweden is our site for the 2013 NAMI Scientific Research Award reception. Home to the Embassy of Sweden, the building offers spectacular views through its glass walls.
