Over the last 20 years, I have been deeply affected by people close to me suffering with mental illnesses. There is a strong social stigma against discussing mental illness, which, like many, I did not understand. After I went to a NAMI meeting, my perspective changed. I learned that 1 in 17 adults are living with a serious mental illness, and that the majority lead successful and fruitful lives with continued support, treatment, and therapy. There is no easy solution, however, as it is a daily struggle at times.

I am still grappling to understand how best help. But it is my role to support, and it is my goal to raise awareness about mental illness, so that if you or anyone you know ever needs support or help, you know where to start. NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness provides support for those suffering and their families. NAMI is a strong advocacy group for more resources to be devoted to research finding effective medications with minimal side effects, and will publish the results.

In honor of my good friend who introduced me to his passion of running, I am running my third half marathon through the campuses of my alma mater, Rutgers on April 21, 2013. In addition to the information you learn at, I am requesting donations to NAMI if you are able. Donating to NAMI through this page is easy, fast and secure, and any amount will make a difference. Both NAMI and I appreciate your learning about mental illness and your donation, and I thank you for your support.
