Towards a Sociology of Schizophrenia: Humanistic Reflections

by Keith Doubt

University of Toronto Press, 1996. 124 pages. Paperback: $13.95
Review by Dick Rowson, Liz Farrell, and William Zaccagnino, NAMI Literature Committee

The author asks, "Why should sociology allow the individual to remain the exclusive domain of the medical and psychiatric professions?" Doubt argues that practitioners should accept the views of patients as an important source of insights into other patients' medical conditions. If the reader is able to work through sometimes difficult sociological analysis, this book provides moving and perceptive insights into schizophrenia written from the patient's standpoint plus practical coping skills and concepts for families and siblings that challenge current medical practices.
