African American Symposium attendeesOpening Day

The NAMI 25th Anniversary Convention officially began with thousands of attendees arriving in Washington, D.C.

Excitement was strong for the African American Symposium, NAMI's Multicultural Action Center's third annual mental health care symposium. This groundbreaking event brought together over 250 consumers, family members, researchers and providers who shared together information, tools, ideas, and approaches to address key mental health issues in the African American community.

NAMI was also pleased to welcome Breakout, a national conference of consumers and providers of mental health and addiction services in the deaf community. The Breakout sessions will run through Thursday, after which all Breakout attendees will attend the remainder of the NAMI convention. Sign language interpreters are being provided for all Breakout sessions and selected NAMI sessions.

Other highlights included meetings of NAMI state leaders and the Family to Family Institute, a round table with the board of directors and special presentations on estate planning. Many attendees also took advantage of a special opportunity to visit the National Institute of Mental Health for a tour of the facilities and presentations by scientists and researchers.
