This isn't the first time the gold medalist has battled back from adversity. In a recent interview for esperanza and in her book with Deborah Amelon, A Skating Life (Hyperion, 2007), she reveals her lifelong struggle with a depression that sometimes left her contemplating suicide. "When I really noticed I had depression, I had no reason for it," she says. "At the time, I was happily married, I didn't have any financial problems, and I'd still burst into tears and not know why."
