National Children’s Mental Health Awareness Day

Capitol Hill Briefing

May 8, 2007

NAMI, a founding partner in a coalition of national mental health, counseling and education organizations, jointly hosted the second annual Capitol Hill briefing in honor of National Children’s Mental Health Awareness Day. The program emphasized the critical importance of effective school and community based mental health services for children and youth, and their families.

The briefing, Children’s Mental Health: Key to Achieving Success in Schools and the Community was held on May 8th to focus on the following goals:

  • Raise awareness about effective programs for children’s mental health needs;
  • Demonstrate how children’s mental health initiatives promote positive youth development, recovery, and resilience; and
  • Show how children and youth with mental health needs thrive in their communities.

Guest speakers included:

  • Moderator: Carl C. Bell, M.D.
  • Honorary Consumer Spokesperson: Howie Mandel
  • Honorary Family Spokespersons: Deborah Marriott Harrison and Scott Harrison
  • Honorary Youth Spokesperson: Marvin Alexander
  • Honorary Education Spokesperson: Mark Weist, Ph.D.
  • Substance Abuse and Mental health Services Administration Spokesperson: Gary M. Blau, Ph.D.

The briefing was an enormous success! Mark your calendars for next year’s National Children’s Mental Health Awareness Day on May 8, 2008.
