Dr Edward Foulks is the Sellars-Polchow Professor of Psychiatry at Tulane University, School of Medicine, and has served there in the position of Associate Dean for the past 7 years. He was trained in psychiatry in Philadelphia and subsequently also received a Ph.D. in Anthropology from the University of Pennsylvania. He received his M.D. degree from McGill University in Montreal.
Having experienced mental illness in his immediate family, he joined NAMI New Orleans and the Journey of Hope Program. He has served as an instructor in this program as well as the NAMI New Orleans Board for more than a decade.
He continues teaching medical students and residents, and serves as an active advocate regarding mental illness issues in the local media, on governmental policy committees. and in testimony to city,state, and federal legislators. Dr Foulks is past President of the Mental Health Association in Metropolitan New Orleans, past President of the Louisiana Psychiatric Medical Association, and current President of the Orleans Parish Medical Society.
In 2001, he was reelected to his second term on the NAMI national Board, and currently serves as Chair of its Public Policy Committee.
