Mike Weaver is in his second term on the NAMI Board of Directors. He works in the Office of Consumer Affairs for Cardinal Innovations Healthcare Solutions in Kannapolis, N.C. as an In-Reach Specialist. Prior to taking that position, he served as the Executive Director of Mental Health America of the Tar River Region in Rocky Mount, N.C. Mike has varied experience in the mental health field after a successful teaching career, serving in both traditional clinical services and several peer programs.
Mr. Weaver found support through a NAMI Affiliate in Maine in 1995. In NAMI, he found a second family which began the journey of recovery from bipolar disorder and his new career in the helping profession.
Mr. Weaver has participated as a NAMI Connections and NAMI Smarts state trainer, president of NAMI Charlotte and NAMI Guilford and four years of service on the NAMI North Carolina Board of Directors. He has facilitated Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) Training for several counties in North Carolina. Mike is the immediate Past-Chair of the NAMI North Carolina Consumer Council and serves on the executive committee of the NAMI Consumer Council. Mr. Weaver has served as Vice-chair of the NAMI Policy, Governance and Development Committees. Mike has also served on the Planning Committee, the Education Advisory Group and has also been a member of the Convention Committee.
Mr. Weaver has been recognized for his excellence by NAMI North Carolina with its 2010 President’s Award (2010), Advocate of the Year Award (2012). He was also awarded the 2011 Ken Steele Award by NAMI and the 2006 North Carolina Community Supporter of the Year Award by the CPMDI.
Two of his favorite quotes demonstrate his belief in optimistic outcomes for those living with serious mental disorders and an expectation that many individuals living with mental illness will get better: “The past should be a point of reference, not a place of residence” and “Recovery is remembering who I am and using my strengths to become all that I was meant to be.”
