The U.S. Census Bureau estimates that 4.1 million American Indians and Alaska Natives lived in the United States in 2000. This represented less than 1.5 percent of the total U.S. population from the Census Buerau in 2001. Studies have also shown that mental disorders among the American Indian children increased similar to those for white children.
