In order to better meet the needs of schools that serve large Latino populations, NAMI has translated the Parents and Teachers as Allies monograph into Spanish. The monograph has been widely popular among school professionals, NAMI leaders, and families.
The booklet outlines the signs of early-onset mental illness in children and adolescents, including the symptoms seen at home and in the school setting. It also shares information on how families and schools can work as allies to ensure children and adolescents with mental health treatment needs are linked to appropriate supports and services. The monograph accompanies the Parents and Teachers as Allies program, which is a two-hour, in-service mental health education program for school professionals, however, it can also be disseminated independently.
NAMI has learned about the tremendous need for additional resources in Spanish that help Latino families understand how to effectively advocate for their children in the school system. NAMI has plans to develop these resources to supplement the Spanish version of the Parents and Teachers as Allies monograph.
