HelpLine Volunteer Information Specialists – Arlington, VA

Position Summary

Do you:
* Have experience with mental illness, recovery, and the mental health system, personally, through a family member, or professionally?
* Want to help others facing mental illness challenges through what you have learned?
* Live in the Washington DC metro area (especially Northern Virginia)?
* Are available consistently 4 hours a week (between 10 am and 6 pm Monday through Friday )?

If so, your knowledge and experience could make you a valuable volunteer with the NAMI HelpLine. The NAMI National Information HelpLine is recruiting Information and Referral Specialists to volunteer at the NAMI National office in Arlington. We treasure our volunteers, and we invite you to consider joining our team of caring, dedicated volunteers and staff.

Job Description

Duties primarily include answering phone, mail, and e-mail inquiries from the public, providing emotional support, sharing mental illness and recovery information, and offering referrals to community resources. All Volunteer Work Must be Done On-Site at the NAMI National Office in Arlington, VA, Monday through Friday between 10 am and 6 pm. Volunteers must commit to working 4 hours a week for at least 4-6 months. Training is provided. Metro and handicapped accessible; parking provided.

Job Requirements

* The desire to help others
* Respect and compassion for people affected by serious mental illness,
* Basic knowledge of mental illnesses, treatments, recovery, the mental health care system -- and an interest in learning more
* Familiarity with NAMI’s programs and resources (or the willingness to learn)
* Good oral and written language skills
* A supportive, empathetic communication style
IMPORTANT: Ability to commit to a 4-hour a week shift for at least 4-6 months. Reliable, dependable work attendance habits.
* Competent e-mail and Internet computer skills. Data entry skills helpful

* Friends and family members of someone with mental illness who want to help others
* Those who want to share knowledge about navigating the mental health system gained through personal experience
* Psychology, social work, and psychiatric nursing students who would like to “get a feel” for people they are likely to help in the future and their real-life challenges
