SUMMARY: *The NAMI Information HelpLine is a national service that receives 120,000 mental illness inquiries a year. Legal Resources Volunteers provide vital legal referral information to the 20 percent of those callers who need legal assistance. *Legal Resources Volunteers give legal referrals and general legal information, not legal advice. *Legal Resources Volunteers may be asked to answer general phone calls. REQUIREMENTS: Legal Resources Volunteers must: *Have a law degree or be in law school. *Possess excellent oral and written communication skills *Communicate effectively with people from diverse backgrounds and show sensitivity to those who may be emotionally distressed. *Show initiative, good problem solving skills and resourcefulness *Commit to working at least one four-hour shift a week during HelpLine hours (10 a.m. – 6 p.m. weekdays) for, ideally, at least six months. Student interns typically work a condensed schedule of more hours for fewer months. *Have strong computer and Internet skills *Be consistently punctual and reliable. *Knowledge of and/or experience with serious mental illness (schizophrenia, major depression, bipolar disorder, etc.), treatments and recovery a significant plus.
