The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), the nation’s largest grassroots mental health advocacy organization for people with mental illnesses and their families, is seeking an Executive Director for its national office in Arlington, Virginia. The Executive Director leads NAMI under the guidance of the Board of Directors; provides strategic guidance to the entire organization; provides support to NAMI's state organizations and local affiliate members; actively engages in strategic planning, advocacy and fundraising; and serves as a national spokesperson for the organization. Since its grassroots inception in 1979, NAMI has become the nation’s largest grassroots mental health organization dedicated to building better lives for the millions of Americans affected by mental illness as well as their families. As people who live with mental illnesses, or who are their families, colleagues, friends and neighbors, NAMI is unique in that its members bring their “lived experience” with them when they work in local communities across the country to raise awareness and provide essential and free education, advocacy and support group programs. NAMI is further distinguished as a “big tent” under which both consumers and families can feel comfortable, learning from each other and working together to further NAMI’s mission. Currently, NAMI is a financially secure and stable organization; a respected voice on Capitol Hill and in state governments across the country with respect to mental health issues; has implemented a NAMI Standards of Excellence to strengthen organizational operations and build brand awareness; and is well into the process of putting in place the technological infrastructure to carry out more efficiently and effectively NAMI’s important mission. NAMI is well poised for the next Executive Director to chart exciting new directions. In searching for the next Executive Director, NAMI seeks a dynamic and entrepreneurial leader with a deep passion for NAMI’s mission. NAMI’s next Executive Director should be prepared to find thoughtful and creative ways of growing NAMI’s membership; increasing and diversifying its financial resources; maintaining and enhancing NAMI’s reputation so that it remains the nation’s preeminent voice on issues related to mental illness; strengthening and making more effective the relationship between NAMI and NAMI State Organization and NAMI Affiliates; ensuring that NAMI remains an inclusive organization respectful of diverse experiences; and being a highly effective leader and executive manager who can inspire, motivate and develop the staff by nurturing a fulfilling, supportive office environment.
