Senate Passes Homeless Legislation

May 6, 2009

The full U.S. Senate today unanimously cleared major legislation to expand and reform homeless programs – the HEARTH Act (S 808).  This action came as an amendment a larger a larger housing bill designed to reform the mortgage market and foreclosures.    NAMI is extremely grateful for the leadership of Senators Jack Reed (D-RI) and Kit Bond (R-MO) in moving S 808 forward.

Background on the Reed-Bond Amendment

The Reed-Bond Amendment is the HEARTH Act – legislation reauthorizing the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act – and is now attached to the larger housing and mortgage reform bill, the Helping Families Save Their Homes Act (S 896).  A House version of S 896 (without the HEARTH Act attached) has already passed the House of Representatives.  So, if the Senate passes the bill, it could be considered by the conference committee as early as this week.
