Co-Occurring and Homeless Activities Branch

SAMHSA has created the new Co-occuring and Homeless Activites branch to create a vision of systems of care for persons experiencing co-occurring disorders and persons who are homeless. Two critical ways they are working to accomplish this are by issuing grants and sponsoring other projects to advance the field. They also provide grantees and the field with state-of-the-art technical assistance to help individuals and entities to address homelessness and co-occurring disorders (COD), two public health issues that warrant significant attention. |

Senate Passes Homeless Legislation

On May 6, the full U.S. Senate unanimously cleared major legislation to expand and reform homeless programs – the HEARTH Act (S 808). This action came as an amendment a larger a larger housing bill designed to reform the mortgage market and foreclosures. NAMI is extremely grateful for the leadership of Senators Jack Reed (D-RI) and Kit Bond (R-MO) in moving S 808 forward. |

On July 30, President Bush signed HR 3221, the Housing and Economic Recovery Act of 2008. The bill is now known as Public Law 110-289. This legislation includes a new Housing Trust Fund to spur investment in affordable rental housing for extremely low-income households, including individuals living on Supplemental Security Income (SSI). |
