Mike Weaver is a member of the NAMI Board of Directors and is the executive director of Mental Health America of the Tar River Region in Rocky Mount, N.C.
Mr. Weaver found NAMI in 1995 as a result of looking for support while living in Maine. He focuses on promoting NAMI education programs, which he believes offer hope and empowerment for everyone affected by mental illness: individuals, parents, friends and community members and providers. He believes there is an ongoing need to remain vigilant in protecting the civil rights of those who experience mental illness. He also is an advocate for individuals living with mental illness who have the desire to return to work and use work as a tool for recovery.
Mr. Weaver is a NAMI Connection state trainer and a NAMI Smarts facilitator. He serves on the NAMI N.C. Board of Directors and has served as president of two NAMI Affiliates. He also is a peer support specialist trainer through the National Association of Peer Support Specialists and a WRAP facilitator. Mr. Weaver was most recently a co-author of an article in the North Carolina Medical Journal.
He is recipient of 2007 CPMDI Community Supporter of the Year Award, 2010 NAMI NC Presidents Award, 2011 NAMI CC Ken Steele Award and 1993 San Diego County Social Studies Teacher of the Year Award.
Mr. Weaver earned his master’s degree in educational administration at National University in San Diego. He is a member of NAMI Pitt County in Greenville, N.C.
