NAMI CAMPAIGN STIGMA BUSTERS EMAIL ALERT Update
|Contact Information: |
Ms. Stella March
Congratulations on another successful letter-writing campaign!
Earlier this month I sent out an e-mail alert concerning an extremely offensive and insensitive product being sold by the San Francisco Music Box and Gift Company-Wonderfully Wacky Wanda, a musical figurine of a woman in a straight-jacket playing the song "If I Only Had a Brain." After receiving what NAMI thought was an unsatisfactory justification of the company's product from the president, I asked that all you stigma-busters contact the company and voice your concerns.
Well, your messages have proven successful once again! After being inundated with complaints, the San Francisco Music Box and Gift Company withdrew Wonderfully Wacky Wanda from their Web site and have canceled and will continue to cancel all orders for the product. Additionally, the item will not appear in the company's next catalog due out in September.
The San Francisco Music Box and Gift Company has been so overwhelmed with messages that I have agreed to transmit their apology to those of you who have not received a direct reply. The company acknowledges that their awareness of the complexities of mental illness has been raised and they apologize for any unintended offense to those affected by serious mental illnesses.
We consider this quite an achievement and we thank you all again for your assistance in getting the message out that stigma will not be tolerated. Keep up the good work and keep an eye out for the next e-mail alert.
