Cultural Healing

December 12, 2008

A recent series in The Daily Herald explores the experiences of Latino and Asian immigrants and highlights the need for more culturally competent mental health services.

As immigrants adjust to American life, they typically face difficulties associated with separation from families and social networks in their home country, and often experience mental illnesses, such as depression and anxiety.

Too often deep cultural stigma prevents immigrants from seeking help when they need it;when they do seek help, language and cultural barriers may prevent them from getting the most effective mental health treatment.

To combat these issues, some mental health providers are integrating traditional cultural practices with American treatments. Attention to cultural nuances may make the difference between effective management of mental illness and untreated illness.
