Social Security Extends Comments Period on Proposed Changes to Mental Impairment Listings

On November 17, the Social Security Administration announced that it will be publishing a clarification on the proposed regulations making changes in the mental impairment listings used by the agency when adjudicating claims for disability benefits.  The changes are in response to concerns raised by NAMI and other groups regarding the use of standardized tests to assess workplace functioning.  In response to these concerns, the agency agreed to reopen the comment period next week a new extend it by 15 days.

During this extended comment period, advocates are urged to submit comments to SSA.  A set of model comments on the rules developed by NAMI, along with instructions on how to submit comments on-line is available at:

You can view the announcement on the Social Security Administration web site.
