SAMHSA is launching an annual initiative called National Children’s Mental Health Awareness Day, which this year will take place on May 8 and every year will be designated to coincide with “May is Mental Health Month.” The theme for this year’s children’s mental health awareness day is “thriving in the community.”
NAMI has joined with other national partners, including the National Mental Health Association (NMHA), the Federation of Families for Children’s Mental Health, Youth Advocacy Leaders, and the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) in organizing a Congressional luncheon. The luncheon, titled Children’s Mental Health: The Key to Achieving in Schools and in the Community, will take place on May 8.
This luncheon provides us with the opportunity to promote the vital need to transform children’s mental health delivery systems to improve the lives of children and adolescents living with mental illnesses and their families. NAMI is extremely pleased that Charles Curie, SAMHSA Administrator, will join the national partner organizations and youth advocates in addressing the luncheon attendees. The luncheon will also feature presentations by Michael Fitzpatrick, NAMI’s executive director, along with leaders from the national partner organizations and youth advocacy leaders.
We urge you to contact your House and Senate representatives to ask them to attend this important luncheon on children’s mental health. They have already received a “Dear Colleague” letter informing them about the luncheon. If your Congressional representatives are not available to attend, please ask them to send a staff member who covers these issues. Here is the vital information:
All House and Senate offices can be reached through the Capitol Switchboard at 202-224-3121.
Thanks for all that you do on behalf of children and families.
