Support Increased Funding for Mental Illness Research

March 15, 2007

A bipartisan coalition of leaders in the U.S. House of Representatives is currently working to secure additional funding above the President’s FY 2008 request for biomedical research at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), including the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH).

NIMH funding is critical for the advancement of mental illness research.

Representatives Ed Markey (D-MA), Dave Reichert (R-WA), Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill.), Chris Shays (R-CT), Chris Smith (R-NJ), and Henry Waxman (D-CA) are circulating a bipartisan "Dear Colleague" letter seeking congressional sign-ons for a letter to House Appropriations Chair David Obey (D-WI) and Ranking Member Jerry Lewis (R-CA) in support of a 6.7% increase in NIH funding for each of the next three years.
