Let’s Push Congress on Children’s Health Insurance

On Tuesday, September 25,  the House and Senate will vote on legislation renewing the popular State Children’s Health Insurance (SCHIP) program, despite a threatened veto from President Bush.  The House-Senate agreement includes $35 billion in additional funding for SCHIP and a new requirement for private sector SCHIP plans to cover mental illness treatment "on par" with all other medical disorders.

ACTION NEEDED

Advocates are strongly encouraged to contact their members of Congress to urge them to vote in favor of this SCHIP legislation and support:

• Expanding coverage to as many as 4 million low and moderate income uninsured children, and
• Ensuring that all SCHIP plans equitably cover mental illness treatment for children and adolescents enrolled in SCHIP.
