Proposed Medicaid Rule Threatens Services For People With Mental Illness - Your Advocacy is Urgently Needed!

September 28, 2007

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services have issued proposed rules on the Medicaid Rehabilitation Services option.  The Rehabilitation Services option is the most important funding source of services for people with mental illness such as assertive community treatment (ACT), multi-systemic therapy for children and adolescents (MST), and other important evidence-based services.  NAMI is concerned that the proposed rules may have a negative impact on the ability of states to pay for these services.

NAMI urges you take the following two steps to voice your concern about these threats to critical services for people with mental illness:

1. Send your comments to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services

Follow these instructions on how to voice your concerns to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. At this link, you will find the necessary contact information, as well as sample comments. You will have the greatest impact when you share your own experiences, and how these regulations will affect your family and community. The deadline for comments is Friday, October 12.

2. Urge your Senators to send their staff members to a Congressional briefing on the proposal

Please call your Senators' offices today, and urge them to send staff members to an important Congressional briefing, in which panelists including NAMI's Executive Director Mike Fitzpatrick, will educate Senate staff about the potentially devastating effects of the proposed regulations. Call the Senate switchboard at 202-224-3121 and tell your Senators that their staff should attend the briefing on Wednesday, Oct 3, at 10:30 in 188 Russell Senate Office Building. NAMI thanks Senators Stabenow and Salazar for hosting this briefing.

Thank you for your advocacy on this critical issue.
