A Major Victory

September 19, 2007

On September 18, the U.S. Senate unanimously passed S. 558, which provides for equitable mental health insurance coverage.

“This is a victory for millions of Americans living with mental illnesses who face unfair discrimination in co-payments, doctor’s visits and hospital stays,” said NAMI executive director Michael J. Fitzpatrick in an official statement.

NAMI thanked Senators Pete Domenici (R-NM), Ted Kennedy (D-MA), and Mike Enzi (R-WY) for leadership in sponsoring the legislation, and is calling now on the House of Representatives to end ten years of Congressional gridlock by passing S.558 and sending it to President Bush to be signed into law.
