Spotlight on NAMI Education Programs

October 26, 2007

The Psychiatric Times reports on NAMI’s successful and expanding education programs.

Inspired by her own family’s experiences with schizophrenia, Joyce Burland, Ph.D., wrote a standardized course curriculum and training guide in 1991. The Family-to-Family Education Program she authored was designed to educate other families coping with mental illness.

Dr. Burland, a clinical psychologist, is the national director of the NAMI Education, Training, and Peer Support Center. The Family-to-Family Education Program, available free of charge through NAMI affiliates, has helped more than 150,000 family members of adults with serious mental illness. It will also serve as a model for NAMI BASICS, a program for parents and other caregivers of children and adolescents with mental illness, scheduled to launch next year.
