I’d like to take a moment and tell you about my son, “Peter”. He has had one diagnosis or another since he was 5 years old. The latest diagnosis is Bipolar II. “Peter” had to leave his middle school due to behavioral problems in 8th grade and has never returned to traditional school… however, this was a true blessing in his life. You see, he goes to a Day Treatment School. His day treatment setting is fabulous… they are making sure he gets a full high school experience while keeping his class size to 8 students, they “accept” his illness, and give him the treatment & tools he needs to be successful. He has worked to maintain HIGH HONOR ROLL throughout his four years. He is graduating with his REGENTS DIPLOMA this year. He has gone to his Prom every year; he has his class ring, and just as importantly as his education, he has FRIENDS!!! He is looking forward to college next autumn at a small college on media because he wants to be a screen writer. Does he still some breaks, yeah… but they are farther apart now because of treatment, and as my mom used to remind me… “It’s only a day”… it is NOT his “whole life”. I am so proud of my son and how far he has come from his “dark days”. Oh, and two more things… he is now a Youth Advocator for our county and asked to join NAMI this year. He IS a success!
