Friday, September 10

Learning at the NAMI 2004 ConventionExploring the Issues, Training for Action

Learning, exploring, sharing and training were the main activities today. The day began with a series of learning tracks on ten different issues critical to the success of the NAMI movement, ranging from children and adolescent issues to aging, and from Medicaid financing to evidenced-based practices. Sessions were led by experts from the fields of government, research, medicine, education, law enforcement, and the NAMI grassroots.

The learning continued into the afternoon with three blocks of workshops designed to give attendees practical tools for making a difference in the lives of people with mental illnesses in their states and local communities. For the first time this year, Advocacy Training Institutes were also offered to give grassroots activists practical training on how to move an issue forward at the state and local level. Topics included criminal justice, veterans, aging and children and adolescents.

In the evening, several special events were held, including an art show, movie screenings, and stage performances.
