Turning Ideas and Insight into Action
Friday was another jam-packed day for attendees at the 2007 NAMI National Convention in San Diego.
The eight symposia in the morning covered a wide range of topics, including:
Evidence-based practices for children
- Recovery-focused services and community housing
- Quality care for racial and ethnic communities
- Consumer employment
- Mental healthcare for veterans
The symposia were followed by the Research Plenary, with the directors of the National Institute of Mental Health and the National Institute on Drug Abuse discussing key advances in mental illness and substance abuse research.
In the afternoon, attendees chose from among 24 workshops and had a brief opportunity to catch their breath before two special evening events: a reading and book signing by Kitty Dukakis, author of SHOCK: The Healing Power of ECT, and a screening of the film Canvas.
A special focus throughout the day was mental illness among gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender (GLBT) individuals. A special networking meeting offered open discussion for those interested in mental health issues with the GLBT community. And two of the afternoon workshops focused on GLBT mental health, touching on such issues as stigma, youth suicide, culturally-competent care, and a vision of recovery. This focus is scheduled to continue on Saturday with a GLBT listening session.
